Nope, I don’t have any personal connection with him. I just watched some of his interviews and all I can say is this guy has a ton of value to share with regards to freelancing.
If your dream is to just earn 5 figures, after hearing this guy, you will end up dreaming more! How about 6 figures every month? or 8 figures every year? It’s very much possible!
It may sound so good to be true at first. But you’ll see later why I’m so excited to share this guy’s tips with you.
How to Earn More Money with your Online Freelancing Business
Without further ado, I’d like to introduce to you sir John Pagulayan. He’s a copywriter and like me, he’s also into this journey of sharing his valuable knowledge regarding freelancing and how you can make more money from freelancing.
I like how many successful Filipinos are now sharing their expertise regarding their craft. This gives more Filipinos, especially those who are just starting out, the chance to learn, improve, and earn more!
Here are John’s top 10 tips with online freelancing that I find very beneficial.
1. You should be desperate enough
I like how he said in one of his interviews that you “should be desperate enough”. This may be only in passing to some of the audience watching the interview but this is important and powerful.
Back when I was in the corporate world, I still can remember those days that I really don’t want to go to office. Not because I’m lazy or not interested with my work but because I believe I can do much better than that.
I feel like there’s more out there for me.
I wanted to have more time with my loved ones, more time for my outside activities, and a scalable source of passive income. There are a lot of things that I wanted which I cannot do if I’d stay in a typical office job.
This made me desperate. I maximized all my vacation and sick leaves and allocate those days just to learn web development.
A lot of struggles, confusions, nothingness, and self-motivations. Long story short, I succeed in what I want. I wanted to achieve my goal so bad that I don’t care even if it would take me couple of years to get it.

2. You have to put in the hours
Most of the methods on how you can earn online can be learned. Some may take longer and some shorter. It depends on what type of service you want to offer in your freelancing career.
For you to succeed in anything you want, you need to put in the hours. You need to sweat your way to achieve 6 figures per month. If your competitor is working 6 hours a day, do more than that!
Almost every skill you need online can be developed and improved. There will be no wasted time. All your efforts learning and practicing will be implanted to your system.
3. There’s got to be something that you can measure
One of the important things I learned from my previous job is that “what you cannot measure cannot be improved”. You need to track your improvements if you want to become good at what you do.
If you’re working out a goal, it should be measurable. No one simply says “I’m much faster than my previous sprint” without data. How fast? what’s your speed? these kind of questions should be answered.
No one simply says “I’m the best marketer on the internet”. Which platform? social media? adwords? email? What’s your CTR? what’s your conversion rate?
This is essential if you want to stand out from the crowd of freelancers offering the same service as yours.
4. Employee vs Freelancer Mindset
Whenever I ask people working at home, they always say they’re “freelancers” though I know they’re typical online employees. This gives me an idea that they still don’t know what they’re doing.
They may be good in what they do technically, but on the business side of things, they lack knowledge and skills.
There’s a difference between a freelancer and online employee. If you simply have an online job, you don’t have much power to negotiate things, you’re an employee, not a freelancer.
Your working hours and monthly income are usually fixed in a typical online job setting. It’s still like an office job only situated at your home. You’re working for a boss.
If you’re a freelancer, you have the opportunity to position yourself as your client’s partner or much better, a consultant. You can negotiate things such as deadlines, cost, requirements, and etc.
With freelancing, you can take ownership and control things around a project. Freelancing is business, not an employment.
5. Invest in a mentor
You can always learn things on your own. However, if you want to speed up your improvement and success, you can’t go wrong investing in a mentor.
Find those people who are already doing what you want to do and already has what you want to have. For sure, they’ve gone through a lot of valuable experience which you can learn with much less time.
Here’s the thing..
No one simply get a great mentor for free. If your mentor is making $30,000 every month and you want to earn the same, be ready to pay the price.
If you want same result, you need to pay the price of your mentor.
6. Mindset is a HUGE factor
Most people are equipped with technical skills enough to earn big online. The only issue is that majority of people have the mindset of an employee. This is what makes people become average earners.
This is a huge factor why many freelancers usually ask for lower price instead of asking for more. We’ve been programmed subconsciously to become slaves. In schools, television programs, peers, parents, and etc.
How we think and make decisions are greatly affected by accumulated subconscious programs from our childhood up to this very moment you’re reading this.
Fortunately, these subconscious programs can be overwritten with new ones. You just first need the awareness so you can consciously allocate space in your mind for improvement.
Being open minded is very necessary. Start changing your perspective by reading books from people that serve as your role model, watch videos, talk with those people who share the same goals as you, and etc.
Read, watch, observe, learn, and re-relearn things!
7. Giving vs Getting
Giving is a way for you to somehow showcase your expertise. When people notice that you are giving valuable information they need, they will be the one looking for you.
In turn, they will get your service even if sometimes it will cost them premium price. Why? because the confidence they have when working with you is already high.
This triggers the law of reciprocity, the give and take law. If you’re giving your prospects valuable information they need to solve their problems, their feeling of need to give back will kick in.
Guess what? This means higher chances for them to get your service and higher chances for you to earn more. It takes creativity and skills to execute this properly so practice is a must.
If you’re new to any industry and you want to stand out from the crowd, the best thing you can do is find your niche.
You don’t want to be “another web developer”. What you can do is to cater a narrow set of audience where your voice can be loudly heard.
Instead of presenting your self as a simple web developer, you can present yourself as “WordPress Developer Specializing in Real Estate Websites” or something like “WordPress Developer Specializing with Medical Sites”
Doing this can make you stand from all “other developers”.
Another thing you need to understand is when you position yourself in a more specialized service, this gives you the control to raise your rates.
9. Learn how to say NO
Whenever you want to be good and stand out at something, you need to focus on that. Doing things not aligned to your goal will make it longer to achieve. You need to decide what to do, and say NO to all others things.
One of the important things you need to consider if you want to earn more in freelancing is to create picture of your ideal clients. Find clients that are willing to pay your worth.
Usually, clients with higher budget are more easier to talk with. Basically, the idea is this: all other clients that don’t fit your requirements, say NO to them.
The ideas is the same with types of projects you’re working on. You don’t want to be doing variety of types of projects just to please every client, NO. If you want to earn more, just do streamline types of projects where you can earn big and work less.
If you’re going to work for a project you’re not used to, you will spend time and effort just to learn and make things work. This will consume your time and you will be less effective.
Again, know where and how to position yourself.
A position where you can work fast and earn big.
All things outside the perimeter of your ideal client and project, say NO to them.
10. Develop a process
This is a long topic to discuss but the basic idea is that you need to establish a workflow if you want to earn more. From client acquisition down to the details of the processes of your services.
It may take a while before you can actually create a perfect process for your business but you can always improve things. You can always start with a simple process and refine it along the way.
Here are some of the areas you where need to establish some process.
- Client Acquisition
- Project initiation and requirement generation
- Project Closing
There are a lot of things you need to consider in this section. If you’ve been in the online freelancing industry and you still don’t have your own process of doing things, you’re missing a lot.
You might be wasting time or not earning the money you should earn.
