As an engineering graduate myself, I observed that there are a lot of successful entrepreneurs, not just here in the Philippines but in other country as well, who happen to be engineers. Although you don’t really need to get a degree to become an entrepreneur but it seems like there are a lot of great qualities engineers posses that makes them really good businessmen.
Listed below are the characteristics engineers have why they can become good entrepreneurs.
1. Engineers are Trained to Solve Problems. One vital part of being an entrepreneur is this quality, the ability to solve problems in a very systematic way. This is very much needed in order to succeed in any business.
Most of the engineers possess strong analytical aptitude. They are excellent in continually examining things with great attention in details and they always find ways how to make things work even better. When something goes wrong, they’re very much engage into solving the problem with a very optimistic mindset.
2. Engineers have the combination of Knowledge and Action. We all know that engineers build things, they make things happen, and that’s the very reason why they exist. A lot of people who want to get started to become an entrepreneur will surely read books, attend seminars, learn this and that and etc. but most people are lacking in execution. This is where engineers shine.
Engineers are attached to the word technology and that just simply means applied science. This is where they excel, applying theories and ideas and putting them to life is what makes a good entrepreneur. Backed with computation and theories, they just simply test everything until they get what they want. Test fast, fail fast, adjust fast is what they usually do and large portion of being an entrepreneur revolves around that idea.
3. Engineers can easily adapt to changes. With the ever changing world and breakthroughs-after-breakthroughs in technology, engineers are the ones who can smoothly cope up with these changes. It’s not that hard for them to learn and relearn things when needed.
From traditional business to online business. From offline marketing to online marketing
4. Engineers have a good combination of EQ and IQ. Most of the intelligent people tend to have a reserved type of personality and they have not-so-good social & people skills. Those who do pure business don’t engage much into the technical side of things or if they do, they keep it to minimum.
Engineers seem to have both and they are somewhat in the middle of having good EQ and IQ. Engineers seem to be good at motivating people and keeping them engaged in the workplace.
Again, you don’t need to become an engineer or need degree to become an entrepreneur, but having a background in engineering can greatly help you to become a successful businessman. Engineers possess traits that are very much needed in entrepreneurship and that’s what makes them ahead of the game.
If you are an engineer, you can always start working in the corporate world and learn from there. Maybe 2 to 3 years of time, you’ll be able to gain all the needed experience you can use for your own business. Don’t just focus in one department. Learn what other departments are doing then try to visualize whole picture of your company.
Once you have the skills on how to run a company, try to start your own small business. From there, build your way up to the size of the company you’ve been dreaming of. There are other other entrepreneurs who are actually making millions by themselves alone but if you’re the type of person who just wants to work with other people, the choice is always yours.
