A “Habal-habal” Driver from Cebu who saved coins to buy new motorcycle goes viral on social media and is now inspiring a lot of other Filipinos to save money too.
“Habal-habal” is a kind of motorcycle that is customized to allow more passengers to ride even without having a side car (tricycle). Habal-habal motorcycles are typically seen in places where other means of transportation cannot be used due to rough and narrow roads.
Jeffrey Catayas from Barangay Tisa, Cebu City, Philippines, a driver of a ‘habal-habal just showed people the power of saving money. After saving coins for 8 months, he manage to buy his new motorcycle.
From a facebook post by SuperBalita Cebu, it’s said that Jeffrey started saving P10 and P5 coins by keeping them inside a bamboo-made bed called ‘lantay’ this January 2016. After 8 months of consistently saving money, he went to a Honda Center in Cebu and brought all the coins he saved.
Jeffrey was able to buy his brand new motorcycle in cash! Counting the coins was a bit challenging so the employees of the motorcycle center helped him to speed up the process.
After SuperBalita Cebu posted Jeffrey’s story, the post went viral. Jeffrey gained attention from the netizens in social media and many are inspired by his story in his persistence of continuously saving money.
From one of the comments, someone said that he salutes the ‘habal-habal’ driver because of his “diskarte” strategy in life. Sure thing, if there’s a will, there’s always a way. He can now use his newly bought motorcycle as his new source of income.
Indeed, practicing how to save money is really an advantage in life. It takes discipline to regularly save money but at the end, it’s all worth the effort.
