There’s a lot of articles about “How To Get Motivated” on the internet but I’d like to share my thoughts about this topic and other things which I think not too many people are able to realize.
Most of the articles about motivation on the internet talks about “What to do” and only few posts talks about “What to think” and “How to think” type of thing.
I believe that our actions should be a result of the things in our mind and how we see things in our mind.
After revisting some of these principles while I was taking a course on TheFourAgreements.com – here’s a post that will hopefully help you to keep yourself motivated in life.
1. Think about the purpose
This is a pretty straight forward thing to think about. The purpose is the most common thing where people draw their energy from. We take action and do things initially because of a reason. When hard time comes, we sometimes forget and neglect the purpose, the reason why we even started we’re doing.
The key idea is to continuously think about the purpose of what you’re doing. It is important to refresh yourself, in a regular interval, the core reasons why you even started.
2. Thinking forward with the options in mind
You might previously asked yourself “Why am I doing this”. Simply thinking about your purpose may suffice to keep you going but if a question like “Of all the similar ___ out there, why this?” is holding you back, you need to add some extra sauce to your purpose.
Here’s the thing..
This is quite big topic to talk about but idea is before you do something, you need to do some planning first.
There are many ways to do a particular task or achieve a goal BUT before taking a path, you need to carefully take into consideration all other possible paths. You need to see the pros and cons of every possible path available to be able to choose the right fit, the most efficient, the safest, the cost effective, the smoothest, or simply the best path.
I hope I’ve transferred the right images in your head while reading that last paragraph. If not, please read again and re-imagine. 🙂
..Yeah I get what you mean, so what?
Simply knowing that the path you’re taking or about to take is the best way, you will work more than anybody else in achieving the same tasks and goals as yours.
Don’t just do something, sit there.
3. Remove the things that hold you back
Sometimes it’s not the lack of motivation that hinders us accomplishing our goals but the “extra” things we do that are not inline with the goal. You need to conserve that motivation to be used for your most important tasks.
Here are some of the things that consume our motivation and prevent us from taking laser focused actions:
- Living in the past
- Thinking and doing things that are not inline with your current goals
- Unplanned activities
- Shiny object syndrome
We sometimes have enough motivation to reach our goals. It’s just that we have many tasks that consume the motivation we have in us.
4. Asking the otherwise
Back in my college days, I have this playful thinking to keep myself moving and execute the things I need to do. In this section, I’ll try to list down some of my way of thinking that helped me accomplished a lot of things during my college days.
“If others can, why can’t I?” – One of the things I always ask myself back then. I was wondering why some of my classmates are doing very well and why ain’t I.
We’re just studying the same set of lectures, same instructor, same school, same everything and yet they still got better grades than me in some subjects which I don’t like. LOL (back in my immature days).
What I did is befriend my classmates that are doing well and get ideas from them what books they read, what they do at home, background check where they came from, get ideas how they think, and etc.
In simple terms, I reverse engineered the lives of my classmates and filled-in the gaps so I can reach and surpass their mental state at that time.
All I can say is that I’ve grown a lot having that kind of thinking. My problem solving skills grew in an exponential rate to the point that I reverse engineered everything that captured my attention and work my ass off to quickly get things I wanted.
“Friendly competition” – This is like Goku and Vegeta type of thing. These guys don’t want to lose and so they end up beating almost everybody that comes their way.
Here’s the thing ..
These guys may be competing to be the strongest characters in Dragonball anime series but what’s interesting is they end up befriending the other characters they just fought with. I hope you get what I mean with this.
“Why not now?” – Whenever I hear myself saying “mamaya na lang” (I’ll do it later) or “bukas na lang” (I’ll do it tomorrow), I practiced to have this voice inside my head to always interrupt and say something like “Why not now?”, “That’s not a valid excuse”. It’s like I’ve created my own supervisor inside my head.
“Why am I not motivated?” – Whenever you find yourself asking “how to become motivated”, ask yourself the other thing like “Why am I not motivated?”.
I get this example from Gary Vaynerchuck where he says he cannot comprehend why in the world are you not motivated and he says something like:
You win the lotto of the universe of becoming a human here on earth and you’re not motivated?! You’re not some random animal or insect or creature from other planet.
Here’s another one..
You are going to die – that’s enough to motivate you.
..and I was like yeah, people need to live their lives as if it’s going to be their last. This will push people to do more to not waste their time.
Sometimes we just need to see things differently. We need pause for some time, take a step back, and start looking things from another perspective.
Try to look at people around you, and ask yourself “Who are the people I want to become?” and “Who are the people I don’t want to become?”, “What situations I’d like to be in?” and “What situations I don’t want to be in ?”.
Think forward twice and backwards once.
There’s a lot of things you can get motivation from. It’s just a matter of being resourceful and optimistic to see these resources to get the overflowing motivation you need to keep moving.
Disclaimer: I may or may not practicing anymore the things I’ve written in this section. My goal is to simply share it with you so you might benefit from it. I don’t know, you might haven’t tried these kind of things yet.
I’ll keep this post updated and add more entries later. If you want to share your own way of motivating yourself, just send it in the comments section below and let’s talk about it! If these things resonate with you, kindly share it with your friends. Thanks!
